When you’re young, you appreciate meeting adults whose humour and outlook on life are as vigorous as your own. That was Jean: vibrant, enquiring, supportive but never indiscriminately so, and so full of laughter and delight in things, it was a challenge to match her energy even as a 20-year-old! I shall remember her with fondness for the fizz of her intelligence and the warmth of her laughter, both of which she bestowed without inhibition.
