I met Jean around 1980 when I was a pupil at Marlborough College. Jean taught the piano to my good friend, Jason James. There were many good times spent around the kitchen table at Old Stone Yard, where the conversation was never dull and always educational, stimulating and challenging! After I left Marlborough in 1982 we remained in touch, and I was delighted when, in 1987, Jean joined me in The Bach Choir. Many happy years of music-making followed, with memorable overseas tours, including Beirut in 2003, where we both discovered a liking for the local raki. She was a prominent and much loved member of the Choir. As well as serving on the committee, she also coordinated and trained the Ripieno chorus for the annual performance of St. Matthew Passion, to great acclaim. It was a sad day when Jean decided to retire from the Choir in 2004. However we remained in touch, and saw each other most recently for lunch in Devizes in April 2021, when Lucy, my wife, proclaimed Jean's bathroom to be 'one of the great bathrooms of the world'. We were friends for over 40 years, and I will miss her very much. The Bach Choir is recording Verdi's Requiem this weekend, and she will be very much in our thoughts as we do so.
